Hello,
We are now on the fourth edition of OnçaNews. This month, we have a lot of important projects ahead: our new crowdfunding campaign to reintroduce our first puma in nature has just begun; ou first reintroduced jaguar recently became grandmother; a new selection process for those who want to be part of Onçafari’s team is now open and much more.
With two months left to the end of the year, we’re already preparing ourselves for 2021. There’s a lot of plans ahead for us to keep taking action towards the conservation of biodiversity and the balance of fauna and flora in Pantanal, Amazon, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. Cacau, the first puma that is going through our reintroduction process, is our next big step. Below you can learn more about her reintroduction and how you can help us in this challenge.
May we remain united for nature.
Best regards,
Mario Haberfeld founder of Onçafari
THE WILD TO THE WILD
Help us with the reintroduction of our first puma
One of Onçafari’s plans for 2021 is to give Cacau, the first puma in our reintroduction center, the opportunity to go back tonature in Pantanal. To do this, however, we would like to count on your collaboration for the whole process of reintroduction, which requires a series of resources to happen – from anesthetics to capture her for exams to a radio-collar with GPS so that Cacau can be monitored after her release.Cacau is five years old and spent practically all this time of her life enclosed in a space of few square meters in a Rescue Center where she had being living since she was rescued as a cub. We believe she deserves a second chance and we’re already doing everything we can to get her back to the place where she should never have left. Shall we make her live free again, together?
Take action now by participating in “The Wild To The Wild”, a crowdfunding campaign that will help us get Cacau back into the wild. Exclusive rewards will be given to those who contribute to this cause and live in Brazil.
MAKING HISTORY
Isa, our first reintroduced jaguar, became grandma
For a reintroduction process to prove its absolute success, it’s necessary that the reintroduced animals – jaguars, in this case – show that they are fully adapted to their habitat. There are only three ways to confirm this: jaguars need to be able to hunt their own prey, to establish territories and, also, to mate and generate fertile offspring. That’s why, when Aurora, daughter of Isa – Fera’s sister and one of the two first jaguars that were reintroduced here in Pantanal by Onçafari –, was seen with her first cub, we could not contain our joy: Isa has just become a grandmother and the first reintroduced jaguar to fully complete the reintroduction cycle with a perfect ending.
ONÇAFARI SELECTION PROCESS
Want to work with us as a bilingual guide?
We are hiring professionals graduated in Biology, Tourism, Environmental Management or related areas to be part of our team. As we operate in different Brazilian biomes, we need candidates that are available to live in a different state of Brazil and, in addition to the fluency in the English language, have a proactive, communicative, organized personality. Also, you need to know how to work perfectly as a team – at Onçafari, after all, we are always united for the animals. If you think this job is perfect for you or know someone who might fit this job, click below to see more details and apply on our LinkedIn.
FIRES IN BRAZIL
Latest news about the fires
The fire situation in Pantanal remains critical, but the beginning of the rainy season may help to lighten the outbreaks of fire. So far, however, 27% of the entire biome has been burned and the brigadiers’ work continues at full strength. Although the Caiman Ecological Refuge area remains out of danger, our monitoring team recently identified a fire focus 20 km away – which could be soon extinguished with the help of the region's firefighters, our team,Caiman Ecological Refuge´s staff and neighbors. Unfortunately, the Amazon and the Cerrado did not escape the recent fires either: a part of the reserve where we operate alongside “Pousada Thaimaçu” in the Amazon region had around 7.000 hectares burned due to an action already identified as criminal and 57.000 hectares of Cerrado also turned to ashes – even though “Fazenda Trijunção”, where we also operate, also helped to fight the fire alongside almost 30 brigade members.

TALKING ABOUT ONÇAFARI
Mario Haberfeld talked about the project at TEDx São Paulo
TED is worldwide known for allowing reaveling ideas to be spread. In October, TEDx São Paulo took place entirely online and was attended by different personalities with important stories to be told; Mario Haberfeld, founder of Onçafari, was one of them. In his presentation, Mario was able to tell about what made him leave his career as a racing driver to engage 100% with the conservation of biodiversity – a topic that, since he was a little boy, has always been meaningful to him. From the initiative to reintroduce jaguars and the development of responsible ecotourism as a collaborative front for the progress of the Onçafari project, Mario gave us a few lessons about nature itself.
